Taung is a small town with a rich history. It speaks of culture and unity amongst its people. Taung means “place of the lion” and was named after Tau, the chief of the Tswana speaking Legoya or BaTaung tribe. Tau, being the Tswana word for lion. With the town’s rich history and scenic views, it offers an unforgettable experience that speaks to those who appreciate this hidden gem’s charisma and storytelling nature. The Gravesite of the late Galeshewe – “A short man who stood tall” (a township in Kimberley named after Kgosi Galeshewe, who died fighting back against colonial oppression.)

The Taung Child Skull Fossil W.H.S - "The missing link"

Visit our icon tourists attraction site, situated in the age old Norlim/Buxton lime quarries. This is where “Africa’s first gift to the study of man’s origin” was excavated in 1924.

The last King of the Batlhaping nation who fought colonial imperialists to the grave after serving over 20 years prison sentence, he continued the struggle against the colonization.

Thomeng Falls - "Small heaven" - Come and see one of nature’s hidden treasures, this is a huge Tufa deposit with water seeping through it perennially.

Taung Dam - "A reservoir of life" - Once a residential place for people of Kolong and Dikgageng, this dam is most popular for activities such as canoeing, fishing, etc. It also provides for a great nature site viewing

Vaalhart Vaalharts Irrigation Scheme - It is the largest in the Southern Hemisphere. It is a highly developed man-made agricultural scheme that produces crops all year round.
